Black Birders Week is back, no jokes! This annual event week honors Black birders, naturalists, and outdoor enthusiasts, showcasing their impact on the natural world and promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion in birding. Black Birders Week 2024, our fifth year of celebration, will take place from May 26th to June 1st under the theme "Wings of Justice: Soaring for Change," underscoring our commitment to birds, environmental justice, and community care. Read on (or scroll through) to check out our daily themes for the year! We’re kicking off the week with our annual #BlackInNature networking event. Introduce yourself and use the hashtag #RollCall to share your story and connect with others in our community. Monday's theme, #DayOfRoost, is about mental health and well-being, prioritizing and choosing when to rest. Humans don't literally roost, but adopting some aspects of roosting behavior, like seeking safety in communities and enjoying social interactions, can contribute to a healthier and more fulfilling life. Tuesday’s theme, #FeathersOfChange, is all about highlighting the people who have and continue to push for environmental change in our communities. Wednesday’s #CelebratingRituals theme is all about mourning as a form of justice. Practiced by both humans and some birds, mourning can be a deeply meaningful and transformative process that contributes to the pursuit of justice by acknowledging, understanding, and responding to loss and harm in ways that promote healing, awareness, and solidarity. Thursday’s theme, #AvianArtivists, is aligned with National Creativity Day! Artists often use their craft to raise awareness of issues they care about. Show us how you use your art to speak for the birds and environmental justice in our #ArtContest! Friday's theme is #CanaryInYourCoalMine, it underscores the importance of paying attention to these warning signs and taking action to address underlying issues before they escalate.
